Bites and Sights - Walking Food Tour in San Jose Small Group

Me and my friends were not able to get the true cultural experience from just walking around San Jose. We took this tour and not only did we get a historical perspective but also, we learned so much about the culture of Costa Rica. Angel was an amazing guide and had so much patience. 10/10

It was my last day in Costa Rica and wanted to roam around San Jose but did not know where to start. This tour is absolutely worth it. Our tour guide Ernesto is so knowledgeable with a warm smile. I suggest not filling up your tummy before tour as you'll be eating lots. :) We toured around Mercado Central and San Jose city, trying different fruits that I have never tasted before but suprisingly good. The empanada and Tamales were so hearty and tasty. We also did chocolate grinding and tortilla making which I find so engaging and cool. I def recommend this tour. 👍👍👍

A tour you need to take while you are in San Jose- Costa Rica. Great learning historical info about Costa Rica. The tour exceed my expectations about the culture and food wise. We really enjoyed the food experience. Make sure you don’t eat before you take the tour because you get lot of food. Overall great great experience.

I booked a tour with them and confirmed it via phone. Waited in the rain and no one showed. Called and text the number/whatsapp and didn't receive a response.

I would highly recommend this tour for all ages. We tried so many fruits, walked all over and learned so much about Costa Rica.

"Share your story" -- It doesn't seem that Viator is actually looking for a review. Participants are being prompted to advertise for you. I think San Jose Urban Tours deserves better. My review: The guide was knowledgeable and engaging, although he seemed unduly concerned about how he would be rated, since he wanted to verify several times that we were enjoying the tour, when it seemed to me it was clear that we were. This seemed to be an indication of the system he was working under. The participants were unfamiliar with San Jose, and the tour provided a very efficient introduction to the downtown area as well as a general overview of the history of Costa Rica. The hands-on cooking experience was enjoyable, although I would have preferred to know about of the food culture of Costa Rica, the main ingredients and most common daily dishes (their names, so we could try them in restaurants). The following day I had to spend some time online to locate the main entrance to the Mercado Central. There are numerous entrances, but a newcomer would not find them easily. A map of where we had been with street names would have been very useful for finding our way back to places where we would like to spend more time. Superstitions were mentioned a couple of times. It would have been interesting to know a bit more about this aspect of Costa Rican culture and more about the relations between the indigenous and European populations in general. The tour was very carefully planned and prepared.

San José was mine and my husband’s first stop in Costa Rica on our honeymoon, and we had no idea where to go or what food would be good to try. Angel was a great guide in not only telling us about the history of the city but sharing some great food with us. We tried a lot of great food might not have gotten otherwise, and even went back after to buy more of the stuff we tried. It was finished off with a stop at their office to make tortillas, hot chocolate, and eat tamales, all of which were amazing. It was a perfect start to our trip and we would recommend it to anyone!

Loved this food walking tour, going around several sites in San Jose. Must have tried 15-20 different foods/drinks ranging from fruits to coffee to ceviche.

Eric was very knowledgeable and entertaining. His explanation of the migration of Costa Rican population was great. All the food he had us sample was delicious and his explanation of how it was native to this area was great. Had a wonderful time.
